Shivani Javeri is a young artist who paints in a somewhat autobiographical mode. Her partially nude figures are drenched in colour and drawn from a repository of images that are excavated from her experience of being female. It is unusual for women to paint nudes in India, which sets her works apart as bold expressions of femininity. Shivani grew from a compulsive doodler into a full-fledged artist. This work plays with identity where what is hidden and what is exposed is reversed in an interesting role-swap.
The work speaks of vulnerability, power and the negotiations of these complex dynamics that surround the nude.
Medium: Acrylic on canvas.
